Families With Hope is obviously a very new site. I have been away from the message board world for a few years. I am Shelly. I
am currently 31 years old and have 2 wonderful children. I have been through a divorce and have raised my children without my former spouse for 3 years and
have now found a wonderful man to share our life with.
On January 10, 2009 I took my 10 year old son, Kyle, to the local ER for a terrible stomach ache. After doing lab work, looking for appendicitis, they sent us to UK Kentucky Children's Hospital in Lexington KY. The next day a bone marrow aspiration and lumbar puncture was done and his diagnosis was confirmed. My little boy had leukemia. After some more tests were done it was diagnosed as M5 AML...... Monocytic Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Less than a week later we were told that he had a FLT-3 gene mutation which meant he would NEED a bone marrowtransplant because with chemo
alone he would continue to relapse.
I am still trying to find information on my son's illness. It's sometimes hard to find the time to gather it, read it, process it, & let it sink in. Then I realized that I wasn't alone. I couldn't be. There are so many other parents out there dealing with so many other things. Here I am, in a hospital filled with children who are here for all different reasons. Their parents are going through their own frustrations and tiring nights. We don't want to leave our children alone in this environment. What if they need us? So I decided to start Families With Hope. A place where we parents could gather for support, to vent, & to encourage one another.
